i came to lebanon in 1996 and was clean shaven, for the first time in my life, and was in a jacket and tie, for the second or third time in my life, and i looked very debonair, for the first time in my life. an old man with a big, tall, thick, white upturned mustache, waiting by his cab for customers, approached me and when i said i had people picking me up, he ran his crusty thick fingers along my clean shaven baby-face cheeck and said something like “yislamli something or other…”
